These 3 Halloween cards feature cute Halloween spiders

…instead of scary ones.

These cards are for my friend’s 3 little girls (who don’t like black and orange or scary things). I think they will love seeing cute, colorful spiders on their Halloween cards this year!

They were a cinch to make using my Cricut Expression.

Making The Spiders And The Paper

The colorful paper is from a package called South Beach by the Reflections company (purchased at Michaels).

The base card is 10×5″, folded to make a 5×5″ card.

Two cards were created so the fold would be on the side, with the blue card folded at the top.

The rest of the paper I used (including to make the envelopes), is from DCWV (Die Cuts With a View). It’s called The Stack 5.

The beige, crackled mud paper was cut into 4×4″ squares and applied to the front of each card.  Each spider web was cut from the Wild Card cartridge at 6 inches.  The size is a little deceiving, because the true scale of the web clearly fits inside my 4×4″ square.  Many of the items on Cricut cartridges are like this, so it’s a good idea to try your item on scrap paper first to be sure you get the size you want.

The spiders are from the Doodlecharms cartridge, cut at 2″.

How To Make The Spiders Dangle

Using black DMC embroidery floss and a sharp needle, I created spiders that dangle from their webs.

Here’s how:

  • Thread a single 8″ strand of floss through the needle and knot one end.
  • Pull through the needle so the free, unknotted end is about 1″ from the eye.
  • Poke into the spider’s head from the back, about 1/4″ from the edge.
  • Pull the thread through until the knot is against the spider. (Do not unthread the needle.)
  • Looking at your spider webs, identify what will be the top.  It needs to be one of the points where 2 lines intersect in order to be sturdy enough for the needle to pierce without breaking.  Once you find it, poke the needle (with your spider dangling on the other end) through that place from the front of the web.
  • Pull the thread all the way through until the spider hits the web.
  • Remove the needle and make a knot about 3″ from the web.
  • Now, gently pull the spider away from the front of the card until the new knot hits the back of the web.  Your spider should not hang lower than the web.

Next, attach the spider web to the card, centered on the crackled square.

It’s a little tricky since the web lines are very thin.  I used a ZIG 2-way glue pen with a chiseled tip. You could also use the edge of a glue stick, or liquid glue applied with a Q-Tip.  Be sure to put a good bit of glue at the top where your knot is.  The best adhesive for the 1/4″ googly eyes is liquid glue.

Inside This Halloween Card

For the inside of the card I cut a 3×4″ block of the crackled mud paper.

On a 3″ side, use a Martha Stewart border punch to create the drips.  Center that on the inside.

‘Happy Halloween” was cut from the Wild Card cartridge at 6 i
nches. (Another sizing mystery — it actually measures 2-1/2 x 2″).

I used 3 sheets of paper from the Paper Stack 5 that color coordinate with the cards to make the envelope, using this method.

I hope you enjoy these colorful cute & cuddly spider cards.

…Happy Halloween!
